The full quote is, “I’ll bring the dip if you bring the Dostoevsky.”

It is from one of my favorite childhood films, Condorman, a fun and crazy movie about a cartoonist who becomes a spy. Michael Crawford (before he was the Phantom of the Opera) is in it.

Today is Chips and Dip Day, so this is the perfect quote to say anytime someone asks you a question. (It means yes.)

A person in your house: Do you want tacos for dinner?

You: I’ll bring the dip, if you bring the Dostoevsky.

See, it totally works.

What are your favorite chips and dips? Potato chips with french onion dip? Tortilla chips and salsa? Fritos and bean dip? Yep, those are my favorites. What are yours? Let me know in the comments or on Facebook.

I don’t know if there is a National Chips Day (it turns out National Potato Chip Day was March 14,) but I don’t eat chips without dip. Perhaps that is why I love that quote so much.

Do you like game shows?

I watched a neat documentary about the past, present, and future of game shows called Game Changers (hosted by Alex Trebek.) I’ve been watching game shows all my life, and I would still drop everything to watch Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!.

It was fun learning about all the different game shows throughout the years and to see hosts that I only knew as older people doing shows back in the sixties and seventies.

When I was a kid, my summer days centered around The Price is Right. I watched cartoons and other game shows while eating breakfast, but at 10 a.m., my brother and I watched the Price is Right. We knew every game by heart.

As soon as Bob Barker told us to control the pet population, the TV was turned off, and we had to play outside. That was fine with us because there were only soap operas after 11 a.m.

In the evening, my family watched Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!. Pat Sajak and Vanna White are almost family members.

Jeopardy! is probably my favorite game show, followed closely by the Price is Right. Do you have a favorite game show? Do you like game shows? If you do, I recommend Game Changers. It was a nice walk down memory lane.

I checked out one of my favorite shows from the library today.

I never saw Treehouse Masters when it first aired on Animal Planet, but I love binge-watching the DVDs. I would love to live in a treehouse and would settle for staying at a treehouse hotel someday.

However, my hubby dreams of living underground, hobbit style. He wants something safe and protected from the troubles of the world.

This led me to wonder what other people prefer. Now, you may think living in an ordinary house on the ground is ideal, but that’s not an option today. Today, I’m playing, “Would You Rather?”

Would you rather live in a treehouse or live underground? Let me know in the comments or on the Facebook page. You already know my answer.

I’m going to go watch another episode of Treehouse Masters.

I’m always looking for topics to write about.

Writing a different post every day can sometimes be difficult. However, I like a challenge, so I follow unusual Facebook pages and receive a lot of e-newsletters on varying subjects to keep my curiosity fed. Today I stumbled upon a question worthy of consideration, and that made me think of another, more important question.

If you fly, you know that you have to place small bags, laptops, wands, jackets, liquids, shoes, belts, and furry monsters (under three ounces please) in gray bins that then go through the scanners. One passenger can easily use three or four bins.

As people gather their items after they themselves go through the “assume the position” scanner, all those now empty bins are lying there, slowing down the conveyer belt. On a good day, a TSA employee is removing the bins faster than you can empty them, but that is the exception. So here is the question:

  1. Do you take your bins down to the cart at the end, do you take all the bins you see down to the cart at the end, or do you leave the bins where they are sitting?

This question was tweeted by Meg! Lewis! (I learned about it in a Nat Geo e-newsletter.) No one responded that they left their bins behind. I’m not surprised. Someone who does that isn’t the type to read travel tweets.

However, there was a split between those who only take their own bins and those who take all the bins. I do either, depending on how long I have before boarding.

You can let me know your answer to this question, but I would rather know the answer to the following connected question.

  1. Do you take your empty grocery cart to the collection site in the parking lot, or do you just leave it near your vehicle?

  2. Do you take other orphaned carts to the collection site?

Not everyone flies, but everyone goes grocery shopping and uses a cart sometimes (I prefer a basket, but it’s not an option when I’m buying cat food.) So, what do you do with your cart?

I always, always, always, return my cart, and sometimes I rescue other carts. Abandoned carts are a huge pet peeve of mine.

Feel free to let me know your answer in the comments. I won’t judge you. Of course, I hope that no one just abandons their cart, but obviously, some people do. I see them all the time.

For those who help others by collecting bins or grocery carts, thank you very much.

I need your input.

I’ve been writing the Footle and Grok blog every day since August 2017, and last December, I started the Footle and Grok podcast. For the last 2 1/2 years, the tagline for all things Footle and Grok as been “Messing about with empathy.”

This tagline is taken from the definitions of the words footle and grok. It’s not bad, but it’s also not great, so I am hunting for a new tagline. I want something commanding with a positive message.

I’m setting up a shop on Cafepress, and this new tagline will be found on stickers, magnets, and tote bags, so it needs to be right. That’s why I need your help.

Below I have a numbered list of taglines I’ve come up with. Let me know which ones you like. If you hate them all, I’d love to know that too. If you have other ideas, I’d love to hear it. The right tagline should be pithy, memorable, and appropriate for the medium. A tough assignment and any comment is helpful.

Possible Footle & Grok taglines

  1. Be curious
  2. Embrace curiosity
  3. Embrace the why
  4. Support daily curiosity
  5. Encourage curiosity
  6. Embrace wonder
  7. Spread curiosity
  8. Never lose your curiosity

Thank you for your help.

Technology often confounds me.

As a few of you have noticed, you couldn’t leave a comment on this blog. (Of course, you could always leave a message on the Facebook page.) This glitch wasn’t intentional, but I hadn’t learned how to fix it.

Thanks to my hubby and reader Jim, I finally learned what the problem was. The first solution I found online was not something I was willing to do as it involved undoing things that had taken me forever to get right.

More research led me to an easy answer, and it worked!!! You can now leave me comments on the website, and everyone will see them. However, I have more questions.

Most people who read this blog do so inside an email (if you don’t, you can subscribe and receive a post a day.) Have you ever tried to leave a comment from the email? Is it possible? Or do you go to the website and leave a comment?

I really want to know, so I can make the blog as user-friendly as possible. So, here is a survey for everyone to answer. When you do, please let me know whether you left the message using the email or the website. Thank you so much for being my guinea pigs. My appreciation knows no bounds.

When you do take down the Christmas decorations?

When I was growing up, we removed the decorations on New Year’s Day. Dad would be home to help with the tree and outdoor lights. We’d put away all the ornaments while watching the Rose Parade, then Dad would haul out the tree while Mom vacuumed up the needles. By the afternoon, the house was back to normal.

Nowadays, I have no problem undecorating on December 26, but this year I was busy visiting friends and haven’t done anything. Today is the day. I can’t wait any longer.

First of all, I want to give my home a good cleaning. An easy time to do that is when the decorations are gone, but the everyday decorations haven’t been replaced. Also, my five-month-old kittens keep knocking the sheep off my nativity, and I’m tired of them ignoring me when I tell them to leave baby Jesus alone.

By the way, if you want to declutter, get a cat. I now have bare surfaces on my tables and bookshelves because the cats love to knock things off, both on purpose and by accident. To save my knick-knacks and my sanity, I cleared everying before my three cute terrors could break them.

So my question for you is this – when do you undecorate your house? December 26? January 1? Twelfth Night? Valentine’s Day? Let me know, and we’ll see what is most popular.

There are a lot of debates when it comes to Christmas cards.

Photo cards vs. traditional cards. Christmas letter vs. handwritten note. Mailed cards vs. ecards. But I’ve never seen anyone discuss handwriting the address on the envelope vs. printing labels.

I’ve been sending cards out for about twenty-four years. For all those years, I handwrote the address on each envelope. However, this year, I entered all my Christmas card addresses into Excel and made sure I had the correct address for everyone. There were a lot of errors.

I did a mail merge in Word, and I’m printing labels this year. My hubby thinks I should handwrite the envelopes like always. I receive envelopes addressed both ways, and I don’t care. What do you prefer?

Do you handwrite your envelope addresses? Do you use labels? Have you ever considered doing something different? Do you feel that labels are impersonal? Let me know in the comments. I’ve already printed my labels this year, but I can always change back next year if it matters.

My office is a mess.

It’s not as bad as it used to be, but I’m in the middle of finishing gifts, wrapping gifts, shipping gifts, occupying cats, hiding hubby’s papers from the cats, and reading a huge stack of books. All these projects are out in the open, so my office is a mess.

“If your desk isn’t cluttered, you probably aren’t doing your job.”

Harold S. Geneen

There is some debate as to whether a messy desk (or office) encourages or discourages creativity. For me, a messy office brings my creativity to a halt. But what am I do? I can’t finish everything today, so I have to ignore the mess and type on.

“Then there’s the joy of getting your desk clean, and knowing that all your letters are answered, and you can see the wood again.”

Lady Bird Johnson

I can’t handle it. I’m going to clean my office today. Otherwise, nothing will get done.

Do you work better with a messy desk or a clean one? I need your input because I can’t think anymore.
