Winter is over (hopefully.)

Yesterday was the vernal equinox, so it is officially spring. Here in the northwest, it even feels like spring. The sun is shining, and the flowers are blooming. This is the type of spring everyone enjoys, so make time. The rain is coming soon enough.

My favorite flower is the daffodil, and I have a nice clump on the corner of my lawn. They are so happy and let us know that spring is here, and winter is dead. I’m never sure that winter is dead until at least June, but hopefully, spring is here to stay.

My favorite spring poem is by A. A. Milne, the author of the Winnie the Pooh books. Share this with your friends for this poem is as happy as the flowers it is about.

Early March doesn’t know what it wants to be.

I went for a run this morning. During four miles, I experienced sun, rain, warmth, cold, wind, and stillness. I took off and put on my jacket more times than I could count. It was a typical March run.

I found a wonderful website full of poems and quotes about March and spring. This short poem summed up my run perfectly. March is a lion right now; we’ll have to see if the lamb arrives.

“The sun is brilliant in the sky but its warmth does not reach my face.
The breeze stirs the trees but leaves my hair unmoved.
The cooling rain will feed the grass but will not slake my thirst.
It is all inches away but further from me than my dreams.”
–  M. Romeo LaFlamme, The First of March

Write a February poem http://footleandgrok.com/write-a-february-poem/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=write-a-february-poem Tue, 04 Feb 2020 03:36:43 +0000 https://footleandgrok.com/?p=687 Read the full article

I’m not fond of reading poetry, but I like to write it.

I was looking for a February poem and stumbled across a fun poetry style. The poem is called “28 Word Poem for February.” What a clever idea. Here it is.

“Freezing
cold winds,
biting chills, and
white snow fluffed hills
Valentine’s day, oh how gay!
presidents’ day is coming our way.
February, sweet and small, greatest month of all.”

Eric Lies, "28 Word Poem for February"

I wanted to write a poem about February. Of course, since it is a leap year, my poem has 29 words. I titled it “A Recipe for February in 29 Words.”

Start with a rodent,
Add a dash of love.
Toss in a president
or two.
Mix it with cold and snow
and just a dash of spring.
It's February!

Jennifer Vandenberg, "A Recipe for February in 29 Words"

That was quick and fun! Why not write your own 29-word February poem and share it in the comments. I’ll also post this on my Facebook page, and you can leave your poem there too. If you need a fun project for a group, this would be perfect. Everyone can be a poet.

I love to discover great writing.

To earn the Bloody Baron badge in my PHRC reading challenge, I have to read a book of poems. I’m not a huge fan of poetry (with a few exceptions.) As I poked around various books at the library, I stumbled upon William Carlos Williams.

I’d forgotten about this poet, which is odd because I have one of his poems on my phone. After reading a few more works by him, I was thrilled to find a poem about January. It expresses exactly how I’m feeling, which I guess is the point of poetry.

January

by William Carlos Williams

Again I reply to the triple winds
running chromatic fifths of derision
outside my window:
Play louder.
You will not succeed. I am
bound more to my sentences
the more you batter at me
to follow you.
And the wind,
as before, fingers perfectly
its derisive music.
